I'll be keeping on eye on this one. I like the premise and the combat system looks pretty straightforward. I definitely think the story progression will be interesting and hopefully fulfill the promises implied by the trailer. I'm not sure how I feel about the crafting / customization system - as this can be something done very well or very poorly depending on how the team builds it. It might end up being one too many game elements thrown into the same pot.

Either way, I look forward to seeing how this one develops.

Well, they aren't kidding about that name. Looks legitimately creepy. The art style also seems perfect for handheld mode.

That being said, I'd like to learn more about the game and why's its classified as a turned-based RPG. It more like an traditional point-and-click adventure title to me.

Found a PC trailer for this, and it looks like it was designed for mouse + keyboard. Hopefully it can make a satisfying jump to console. If so, it looks like it might be worth checking out.

"Escort Quest - The Game"

All joking aside, I'm not sure what to make of this. The trailer doesn't give me a good sense of what the ebb and flow of the game would be, and the reviews on Steam are middling. It says "action" but the movements of all the characters look a bit sluggish during actual combat.

I'm not sold based on the trailer alone. Looks like a project still pretty early in development. I'd be interested in seeing how it looks 6 months to a year down the line.

@Duelist Thanks for the recommendation! I've got a lot in my backlog, so I'm not sure when I'll get around to there. But I'll keep your advice in mind when the time comes.
Star Story: The Horizon Escape
July 6, 2018 09:13:51 AM
This game needs a trailer. There's such a mash-up of elements, that I can't get a sense of what the gameplay is actually like just by looking at the screenshots.
July 5, 2018 02:45:43 PM
Shared this on the discord, but this will probably get more visibility if I post it here: I asked the developers on Twitter if they had an update on the release date for Switch, and they said they are shooting for late August.
Dungeon of Zaar
July 5, 2018 01:57:21 PM
This looks really interesting. I never got too deeply into the PvP on any other TRPG, other than dabbling a bit with it in FFTA. They are advertising this game as built from the ground up with PvP in mind, which should be pretty interesting. If they manage to make the combat deep enough, this will be a must buy for me.
Valthirian Arc: Hero School Story
July 5, 2018 12:50:08 PM
This looks like it could be really great or just middling, depending on how well all these mechanics are executed. If they manage to give some depth to the combat side of things, while keeping the academy building both creatively liberating and impactful, I think they could have a great title on their hands.
RPG Maker MV
July 5, 2018 11:51:51 AM
I don't know if this will be the RPG maker I finally buy or not, but the official announcement from NIS says that they'll have the player app for free on the Switch, so at the very least I'll be able to play other people's creations.
Portal Knights
July 5, 2018 08:33:05 AM
Finished the demo this morning. There's nothing to do beyond the first island, so I wasn't able to play through any other biomes. All told, I think I'll pass on this one. It has a lot of potential, but the execution just isn't what it should be.
Portal Knights

Just put 20-30 minutes into the demo. The controls take a bit of getting used to. I ended up remapping a few of the buttons so they’d be closer to other games.

Compared to DQ Builders, I was a bit underwhelmed. The starting area I had was very busy, with tall grass everywhere that made it hard to see the exact landscape and hid a lot of the smaller enemies. And overall everything felt kinda small and cramped, but again, that could just be a starting zone issue.

I might put some more time into the demo to get a better impression.
Dust: An Elysian Tail
July 3, 2018 09:18:06 PM
Thanks for the rundown! I watched the trailer for this and wondered what about it qualified the game to be an ‘RPG.’ The answer seems to be that it’s more of a metroidvania with RPG elements.

Game looks smooth. I’ll definitely be keeping my eye out for it.
Pokémon: Let's Go, Eevee!
July 3, 2018 11:36:43 AM
Definitely going with Eevee on my end. Eevee was my first favorite Pokemon, and I'll be thrilled to have the little guy riding on my shoulder throughout this adventure.

Seeing this game announced actually got me casually playing Pokemon Go again. I want to have some good stuff to transfer over come November.
Banner of the Maid
July 3, 2018 10:11:00 AM
I could do without the random zoom in on the boobs, but otherwise this looks like a gorgeous tactical RPG. I found one screenshot of actual gameplay on Gematsu that makes it look like it's borrowing some elements from both Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy Tactics. Definitely one to keep an eye out for.
July 2, 2018 02:33:37 PM
This looks really fantastic. Reminds me of Quest of Dungeons, if you took the 8(ish)-bit style and upgraded it to 16-bit glory. I see this is out already on Steam, but not seeing a firm release date for the Switch version. Latest news story I can find says it was expected in Q2 of this year, but clearly it hasn't hit the eShop yet. Anyone know of any updates?
Mercenaries Wings: The False Phoenix
July 2, 2018 11:53:29 AM
I guess the clock is ticking on finally picking up Mercenaries Saga Chronicles. I wonder if they'll be using a new engine, or continuing on with the one used in the first three games.
Octopath Traveler
July 2, 2018 10:57:07 AM
@McWhoopass I'm probably going to start by playing through Olberic's opening chapter again. That way it will all new content from there on out. It helps that I love being able to challenge any random villager to a fight - I'd like to get able to do that from square one.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
July 1, 2018 07:44:01 AM
I’m really torn on this. I loved the Fire Emblem titles on GBA, but something about recent FEs have left me disengaged partway through. I’ve tried more than once to get through Awakening and Fates, but my run always Peters out. Something about the difficulty balancing just feels off. Like the appropriate difficulty is somewhere between easy and normal. Or maybe it’s just the scaling isn’t as good as the old days.

Thanks for the review! This gave me a great idea of what kind of experience is to be expected. The game sounds really charming, but I'm sad to hear about the performance issues. Hopefully they can release a patch and get the game running more smoothly.

"No, that's just a coincidence." - I definitely laughed out loud in the middle of my office. Can't wait to get my hands on this.
Hand of Fate 2
July 17, 2018 09:27:20 AM
Great review! This gave me a much better sense of what the game is all about, and I'm certainly intrigued enough to put it on my list. I'm a fan both MTG and DnD, so this seems like a great fit!
July 11, 2018 09:45:04 AM
Thanks for the review. I do remember potion chugging being much more a thing in vanilla WoW - even as a Hunter I had to manage my resources much more studiously than in the modern era. Although I find current WoW to be almost TOO forgiving in that regard. Something in the middle would have suited my needs much better.

It sounds like the hotbar issue really comes down to the fact that Tanzia is modeled after a classic PC game, but being built for consoles. So the quality of life improvements needed for such a conversion just weren't completed well enough.

I might still pick this up eventually, but I'll probably wait for a decent sale.
Squids Odyssey
July 6, 2018 09:09:42 AM
I've had my eyes on this since it first popped up on the site, and I was really hoping it would get a good review. Looking forward to picking it up one of these days.
Asdivine Hearts

My main approach to subquests is this: If I'm enjoying the game, I'll mosey my through, picking up subquests, and only moving on from an area when I feel satisfied. Then, if I feel myself getting bored or see another game on the horizon, I'll just plowing through the story and let the subquests be for awhile. Sometimes I'll alternate back and forth between the two multiple times in a single game.

This approach has made it much easier for me to complete games, rather than letting them sit half-finished.

I hadn’t heard anything about this game until I saw the review. I’ve played a good amount of DND over the last several years, so this definitely looks appealing. Thanks for the great review.
Fallen Legion: Rise to Glory
June 30, 2018 08:29:23 AM
Reading through the text of the review, I was expecting the final rating to at least be an ‘OK.’ The description of the game made me somewhat interested, in a ‘maybe I’d get it on a super sale’ kind of way.

But seeing it rated ‘bad’ makes me feel like I should reread, lol.
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana
June 29, 2018 08:44:23 PM
Never played a Ys game before, but between this review and the hype from the discord, my interest is peaked. Hopefully I can find the time to squeeze this in sometime in the coming months.
Dragon Quest Builders
June 29, 2018 08:42:20 PM
So much to be said about how great this game is. As someone who grew up playing the NES Dragon Warriors, the plot of Builders drew me in almost immediately. The demo took me from passing interest to must-buy in the span of 30 minutes. The plot is just strong enough to keep me interested, and subverted a number of standard tropes in each chapter. Besides all that, the building aspects were right up my alley, with just the right mix of direction and free discovery.

DQ Builders is easily one of my favorite games on the Switch, and eagerly anticipate the sequel.

Great review. I'll be bumping this up a few spots on my wish list.
