Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana
September 4, 2018 12:21:56 PM
@PMGoogles This was my first Ys game and I had no problem playing through it. I don't think you are at a real disadvantage by playing it before experiencing the other games, but you can find my full opinions in my full review here:
Harvest Moon: Light of Hope

@CRMagic Dude, well done! You have addressed all of my concerns with the game in a short, concise summary. I can look past the graphics if the gameplay is solid, which sounds like the case even though it might feel a little dated in comparison to Stardew Valley. Will definitely be picking this up now, thanks to you!
Romancing SaGa 2

I've been in a bit of a lull the past few days with the impending release of Octopath, and haven't really been in the mood to play much of anything. So, I decided to start this back up and have really been enjoying it so far. It definitely tickles any kind of grinding itch you might have neglected for a while. Really, if you don't like grinding then stay away. It's fun, though!
Mercenaries Wings: The False Phoenix

Although I wasn't overly impressed by Chronicles (outside of the obvious value you get for the price), I'm very much looking forward to this game. I really believe these guys have the ability to make a great strategy RPG, which is why I'm hoping they improve on the original engine they used in order to make something really special.
Battle Chasers: Nightwar
June 26, 2018 07:16:43 AM
@adam san tacos Out of curiosity, what were your issues with it? The majority of people really enjoyed it here, so I'd love to hear your take on it!
The Lost Child

Started playing this yesterday, and it is weird. Like, really weird. I like the mechanics but the story so far is pretty out there. Busty angels, Cthulhu dressed in a business suit, and no tentacles yet but I'm sure it is coming. Honestly, if it wasn't for me enjoying the combat and dungeon crawling I probably would have immediately regretted the purchase based on the plot so far. But I do plan on powering through it and putting out a staff review in the near future.
Pokémon Quest

Definitely an interesting game, and one of the better "mobile" games on the Switch. While I can see the appeal, it doesn't speak much to me personally. I also don't really like how you are at a disadvantage in combat if you play without touch controls. Seeing as I play games 90% of the time docked, that was a huge turnoff to me. But I am glad to see that it is popular and doing well.
Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs - Royal Edition
June 14, 2018 07:11:20 AM
I'm pretty sure that they did release a patch early on, but I have not tested it myself to see if it makes much of a difference. Would be curious to know, though.
Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles
June 11, 2018 11:30:44 AM
I have put a few hours into this game and have decided it is not for me.

Initially, the no combat thing didn't really bother me. But everything else is so shallow, that you really kind of long for any kind of combat period. Yonder, to me, feels like it offers the busywork of an MMO without an engaging story and/or combat. I liked the introduction to the game, but it kind of opens up thereafter and doesn't put a huge emphasis on the story after that.

Freedom is great in open world games, especially when you can be whoever you want to be. But at the same time, the content still needs to be engaging enough to keep you invested. There is farm management and such here, but nothing we really haven't seen before. Without combat, quests boil down to fetch quests of no story substance, as well as escort missions that, in a supposed peaceful continent, doesn't really make sense.

Yonder has a truly beautiful art style, however I did not find myself enjoying it as much as I thought I would on the Switch. Docked, there are definite slowdowns in more populated areas, and the clutter distance particularly in grassy areas is pretty shallow. In handheld mode, there is a pretty dramatic blur that comes into play in favor of smoother performance.

I also was not a huge fan of the fisheye-like field of view. While I appreciate being able to see a wide range of terrain at once, there was just something about it that felt a bit "off". Ultimately, the whole experience just seemed a little too shallow for my tastes. I enjoy an open world just as much as anyone, but I need a reason to be excited about exploring it in order to keep it in focus.
Titan Quest

RELEASE DATE HYPE! I would prefer Diablo, but Titan Quest is more than capable of scratching that loot grinding itch until that day comes.
RPG Maker MV

As an indie developer myself, the prospect of this excites me greatly. I don't have any experience with the engine, however. Sure, there will likely be tons of throwaway titles to sift through, but I guarantee that some quality content will be churned out through this, not to mention the almost infinite value it will bring with an ever-changing library.

At the very least, I will buy it just to play the games. But I may dabble in the development side as well...
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age
June 6, 2018 09:25:54 AM
Seeing as this game is releasing on PC in September and won't be on Switch until at least 2019, I will likely play it on PC and may not double dip. It is a shame that some massive RPG titles like this are not releasing at the same time as other platforms. But maybe I will love it enough (and there will be enough time between the PC and Switch versions) that I will want to play it all over again on Switch.
Harvest Moon: Light of Hope
June 6, 2018 09:14:16 AM
Has anyone tried this out on Switch yet? I imagine that something like this would be hard to go back to after experiencing Stardew Valley. Still, it interests me a little bit.
Knights of Pen and Paper +1 Deluxier Edition
June 4, 2018 07:12:30 AM
I just picked this up over the weekend, and am really enjoying it so far. It is an interesting perspective on some tried and true mechanics that really make for an enjoyable experience. Expect a SwitchRPG review of it in the near future.
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana

@jonnydarkfang Performance-wise, you aren't going to have to worry about this port. Expect a full review of the Switch port here in a couple weeks!
Cat Quest II: The Lupus Empire
May 22, 2018 08:49:49 AM
I wasn't terribly impressed by the original game, but it had some promising systems. I would be willing to entertain the sequel, given that it pushes the envelope a bit further in comparison to the original.

Also, I like cats.
Shadows of Adam

I played several hours of this game on Steam and it was a wonderful experience. A challenging, beautiful retro-inspired RPG that will be right at home on the Switch.

I never finished it, so the idea of it coming to the Switch interests me greatly.
Punch Club
May 18, 2018 07:04:00 AM
I briefly played this game on Steam a couple years ago and remember enjoying it. I will probably double dip as it seems like a game that would be well suited for a more portable system.
Asdivine Hearts

@smacd LOVE the comfort food reference! That is absolutely on point as far as KEMCO RPGs go.
Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs - Royal Edition
April 23, 2018 11:24:02 AM
Despite craving a tactical JRPG with looks more akin to FFT, this game didn't do it for me. First, the performance issues are pretty bad. In the dev's defense, they have addressed most of them and have offered some suggestions + a road map for when other issues will be fixed. But it was enough of an issue to turn me off completely before I really had a chance to get started.

We're talking load times, folks. Load times are frequent and atrocious. Even going between sections of your kingdom often call for 5-10 second loads each time. Compounding it is the fact that the entire design of the game is heavily segregated and instanced; so you really feel these load times pile on quick. Not only that, but it killed any sort of immersion I might get because I saw more loading screens than anything else.

The performance issues spill over into combat as well, where sometimes the screen will freeze for a few seconds before executing your command. That said, the combat is fun, and the graphics are beautiful. But I just can't recommend this until they resolve the performance issues a bit more.

@Duelist I'm right there with you on most of your points! And please don't get me wrong, I do really like the soundtrack. I just simply stated that I had not spent enough time with it to really classify it under an "essential" status due to finding myself distracted with other things the game throws at me. That said, I have spent more time with the standalone soundtrack and have found myself really enjoying most of the pieces!

@adam san tacos Totally agree on both points. The comparison to FFVI did not do it any favors, and I really love the combat system as well. Curious to see how the team moves forward from here.

I appreciate the review. You have solidified this as a definite "buy" for me at some point. Also, am I the only one that immediately thinks of the "what are ye buying" merchant from Resident Evil 4 whenever I see this game's logo?
July 18, 2018 03:26:46 PM
@16bitSwitch - I have no doubts that you, as well as many other people could potentially find much more enjoyment out of Tanzia than I did. But I do feel like I had a well enough grasp on the mechanics to determine that my issues therein were not due to a lack of understanding of the systems themselves, but rather my personal tastes of them. I just did not find the reliance and necessity of potions to be an engaging experience, though that is not to say that it will be an issue for everyone!
July 12, 2018 11:25:13 AM
@fahsky Sorry, by "it" I meant that I had to restart the entire last dungeon; not the entire game. Had that been the case, I would have had a much more negative reaction towards the game than I did!

@Tuwile I hope you enjoy it! It's the very best KEMCO RPG I've played, but that's not to say it's not without flaws either. Keeping that in mind, you should find some enjoyment out of it.
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana

UPDATE: The developer said that there will be a day one patch that addresses some text issues as well as some other things, so some of my gripes could be fixed at launch.
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana
June 20, 2018 06:45:06 AM
@CRMagic I think a lot of that might stem from curiosity of the series itself. Jonny and I both didn't have a ton of experience with Ys as a whole, and Firestream might be in the same boat. Honestly, I had no real interest in Ys until I played this game, and now I call myself a fan.

@DeniosTheGamer Framerate-wise, I think it runs smooth enough in both handheld and docked modes. But yes, the weird transition from sharp objects to blurry while in handheld was a bit jarring. That could very well be fixed before they officially release the game though.
Knights of Pen and Paper +1 Deluxier Edition
June 14, 2018 06:33:50 AM
I can see your point on the price, but many ports on the Switch have suffered the same fate despite being offered for less on other platforms. As a consumer I'd rather it be cheaper of course, but it doesn't make sense from a business perspective to release a game on a new platform for a steal, unless they are going the F2P route then its a non-issue.

I don't like playing games on a phone (but like having the option for portability), so buying it for Switch was the best decision for me. Admittedly, the nostalgic pen and paper factor has a lot to do with the sustained entertainment level for me, and I can see it wearing thin (like you said) to those a bit less interesting in this style of game. Appreciate the response!

@Manaricelle I'm with you, patiently waiting for some iteration of FFT!

@Tuwile Good call. There's definitely value to be had with the digital price, but the physical version I'd only recommend to collectors or those that just really love the series.

I already wanted this game before reading the review, but you definitely solidified my decision. Sounds like a great buy!
Devious Dungeon

@jonnydarkfang agree with you on pretty much every point! Thanks for reading!
Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King
March 28, 2018 10:43:32 AM
Couldn't agree with you more! Definitely a title that provides some old school Zelda nostalgic feels while updating some of the more archaic systems and design choices from that era. And it does so all while respecting its roots and delivering the final package of goodness to a more modern audience. Great review!
Revenant Saga
March 7, 2018 12:51:57 PM
Great review. Having played through the game myself, I agree with pretty much every point you made. Something you brought up reminded me of something I forgot; the exploration later on in the game. It is definitely annoying to get something like a controllable ship only to be gated from most avenues by some other mechanic.

I am glad to see the rating as OK, because I think that is fair. It definitely isn't a terrible game, but certainly has its flaws.
Mercenaries Saga Chronicles
March 7, 2018 07:36:42 AM
@jonnydarkfang Definitely a lot of content here for the price. If you can get past the issues I mentioned, you can get hours out of it for sure.
Lost Sphear
February 28, 2018 12:13:43 PM
@RogerAmidon I believe that a US physical version exists but is exclusive to the Square Enix Online Store. That, or going through a third party re-seller. I could be wrong though.
Lost Sphear
February 28, 2018 12:10:38 PM
@rlcooper83 If you liked Setsuna, you will probably appreciate this game more than I do. As mentioned in the review, I did not care much for it. I imagine that fans of Setsuna may have a more enjoyable time though.
Lost Sphear
February 28, 2018 12:09:32 PM
@CRMagic Honestly I don't think it will matter much either way. The stories aren't tied together, so there's nothing wrong with just playing Lost Sphear or just I Am Setsuna. The only difference in having experience with one is kind of knowing what to expect if you were to play the other. Stylistically and mechanically, both games still play pretty similar to each other despite the changes made in Lost Sphear.
