Harvest Moon: Light of Hope
July 26, 2018 08:35:46 AM
OK, I've gotten some playtime under my belt, so here's my first impression. If you are still curious, feel free to ask more on Discord.

This game is an experiment by Natsume to see if they can make an old-style Harvest Moon, more like the games pre-Wii. In my opinion, they have mostly succeeded.

Graphically, the game is laughable, but it becomes a little more tolerable if you realize this game is probably a rework of the abandoned Wii U port of Seeds of Memories. So old engine given a tune-up. The character models are decent, but backgrounds are barely a step up from Paint, and your character looks like he's running in a harness while the world moves under him.

That out of the way, the gameplay is pretty solid. You have context-sensitive actions, so you don't have to switch to the hoe to till, then to the seeds to plant, then etc etc. You just press a button, your character uses the most appropriate tool, and a quick menu pops up if you need to make a choice (seeds, fertilizer, bait).
The farming system is one of the main unique things about the new Harvest Moons: each crop can grow in most seasons and different soil types. With the right season, soil, and possibly fertilizer, you can grow mutations, variations on the base crop that sell for more and whose seeds can be unlocked if you sell enough of them.

The main story is typical and a bit childish (this is NOT a story game), but it leaves you a lot of broken bridges, figurative and literal, to work toward fixing. This gives a sense of progression, as you unlock new fields, areas, and activities as you go.
The main farm can be decorated with objects, and your home can be furnished with some options. It is not even close to as extensive as Stardew Valley, or even the options in the latest Story of Seasons, so if you like the blank canvas of that game, take a pass.

I'd recommend this game to:
-- people who like the old SNES or 64 Harvest Moons
-- people who like the new Harvest Moon games but get annoyed by terraforming
-- people who liked Seeds of Memories but wanted a proper console version
-- people who just want to farm calmly, maybe with a helper (there is a limited local multiplayer system)

I do NOT recommend if:
-- you think the older style games' time is passed
-- you prefer the socializing focus of Story of Seasons
-- you think Stardew Valley would be boring without the mine combat and/or the crafting system

That was one of the brightest news spots of the day. This game is on top of my priority list after Octopath Traveller, and unless he posts an entirely unreasonable price, I should be able to get it day 1.
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

I feel like 9, at least, did a good balance of modern amenities vs series traditions...but then 9 was the first game in the series I actually got into. I think 11 will do good by everyone.

@McWhoopass This. I'm not fond of Fire Emblem, but Zelda just rocks.

I've been excited for this since the demo. Iirc, you see the enemies in the way a la Chrono Trigger.

Have you ever played Elona? That was a good roguelike with a loot system that didn't trouble you if you lost something.
DRAGON BALL Xenoverse 2 for Nintendo Switch

I'm probably the only one tired of seeing Dragon Ball everywhere, huh?
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

That's confirmed, actually. Wha t they didn't confirm is any date whatsoever.
Fire Emblem: Three Houses

I want to like Fire Emblem...I really do. But I haven't gotten close to finishing one since the first GBA game.

I'm waiting on Switch, period. Partially because I haven't got a PS4, but...

I have had several people who are hardcore gamers recommend this to me.
Octopath Traveler

@McWhoopass I read through all the character introductions at the beginning of new game and picked the one that sounded most interesting. I went with the Merchant, since starting with a character with wanderlust seemed to be the most sensible. :)

@fahsky I just verified on the demo version, it does not have a control scheme for a single joy-con. I doubt they could fit all the functions of the game in on one set of buttons.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna ~ The Golden Country
June 30, 2018 10:06:03 AM
I suppose what it comes down to is that they thought it was a good enough story to stand alone and maybe attract some holdouts to the $60 main game?
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
June 30, 2018 09:59:20 AM
@McWhoopass Of course you do. And you want to do it somewhere other than your house. That's the brilliant part!

There is a demo on eShop for this game. It's very good, but maddeningly short!

@fahsky No, I don't believe so.

I like the idea of naming your magic and the properties flowing from that, very Scibblenauts. Has anyone heard anything else about the game, though?
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
June 26, 2018 07:27:04 AM
So I just got this game a few days ago. As someone who tried and failed to get through Xenoblade 1, I feel like a good number of the issues from that game are polished away. Combat is complex, but not quite as hard to pick up and quests are more focused. This helps me keep the sidequest bug quelled. We'll see how far I get.

I played the demo. There are seeds of something interesting in there, but the demo totally fails at showing off much. Maybe actual reviews will change my mind.

That's kinda how I felt on the Ys VIII review: the final verdict didn't match the text. This one, though, I think ultimately ReallyPassionateGamer thinks there's just not quite enough in the game to recommend it.

With frame rate issues, I'll bet a bunch of devs are trying to catch up with Nintendo to learn how to handle that on Switch. Hopefully this becomes less of an issue in another year.

I'm confused. Other than the translation, this sounds like a glowing review, but everyone seems to be like "We'll, maybe I'll consider it..."

I'm putting this on my wishlist. It sounds awesome!

I'm seeing a pattern on Switch where games that were previously mobile freemium games are priced higher than we (as a site) think they should be. This and World Neverland are prime examples. Do mobile devs just not understand the true (lack of) value of their games?

This doesn't sound like performance issues due to platform, just sounds like a dev who didn't focus enough on details.

Kinda brutal...with all that the Switch has to offer, this clearly will go down in obscurity.

So as someone who has played neither Setsuna nor this, would you recommend buying Setsuna instead, or giving this a look with fresh eyes?
