RPG Port Town Themes – Personal Favorites
Music is an integral part of any game. While pieces that truly complement their environment are often capable of stirring emotions and conveying a story without the use of words, dull, uninspiring themes can go completely under the radar.
The list below is a compilation of some of my personal favorite “port town” themes in RPGs. In this list, I have attempted to provide an eclectic mix of tracks from a variety of RPGs throughout the years. As such, it shouldn’t be considered an all-encompassing list – instead, I’d love to hear some of your own picks in the comments below!

Meribia – Lunar: The Silver Star / Silver Star Story Complete
The unsung JRPG hero of my childhood, the seemingly abandoned Lunar franchise has a cult following for good reason. While not a mechanical marvel by today’s standards, the soundtrack (among other things) will forever hold a special place in my heart. The port city of Meribia is the first major city Alex and his companions visit on their journey, and it’s accompanying ambience is both inviting and exciting. Whether you prefer the more subdued OG Sega CD version or the bombastic take found in the PS1 remake, there’s sure to be something for everyone here.
Seaport City Ruan – Trails in the Sky FC
Speaking of inviting, here we have a piece from the legendary Trails series that fires on all cylinders. Despite some extremely shady things happening behind closed doors when Joshua and Estelle make it to the seaside port, this track’s catchy, upbeat tropical vibes shine straight through.
Costa del Sol – Final Fantasy VII
We can’t really discuss port destinations without mentioning one of the most iconic locales of all time: Final Fantasy VII’s Costa del Sol. It boasts a relaxed, exotic resort feel that pairs rather well with any luxurious getaway spot close to the beach.
South Cape – Illusion of Gaia
Conversely to everything else before it, South Cape serves as the home of protagonist Will in Illusion of Gaia and is introduced before his unexpected adventure even properly begins. Although things are just getting started, you immediately get a sense of the boundless opportunities and excitement that await the long road ahead here.
Summers – Earthbound
If Costa del Sol wasn’t quite chill enough for you, then this track from cult classic Earthbound might better suit you! While the game wears its often wacky and crazy antics on its sleeve, Summers is a nice departure from it all by providing a very fitting and enticing piece to the tourist destination.
That’s it for this list. What did you think about my selection? Stay tuned for more musical spotlights in the future!
