Review: Darkest Dungeon via Geeks Under Grace

Darkest Dungeon is just short of being an absolute masterpiece, but is still an amazing game. Red Hook Studios meticulously crafted a memorable experience that is fun to play in short bursts or get lost in for hours.

DARKEST DUNGEON NINTENDO SWITCH REVIEW: IT WEARS ON THE HEART via SwitchWatch

I was completely enthralled with this game. It makes the most of its assets to create a dynamic RPG with characters whose personalities are changed by the journeys they embark on. The writing is deliciously dark and detailed, and the journal entries embellish this factor of the game perfectly. The art style is very detailed, and while the animations are simple, the camera zooming in dramatically at key moments makes it feel much more epic than it would otherwise. Darkest Dungeon will provide you with as many as 80 hours of gameplay thanks to how it cleverly employs procedurally generated content, permadeath and not forcing you to start the whole game over when your team dies. It is a stressful game and not for the faint of heart, but it features an easier mode for beginners. I found this to be one of the strongest indie games which I have played on my Switch, and it's score will reflect that. I'm giving it a 9.5/10. This game is fantastic and is worth playing for anyone willing to attempt to explore the darkest dungeon.

Darkest Dungeon (Nintendo Switch) Review via Cubed3

Despite gameplay better suited for a mouse and keyboard, Darkest Dungeon transitions rather well from PC to Switch. The controls were always going to be convoluted when adapted to a controller, but it doesn't take too long to adjust, and the core gameplay loop is strong enough where overlooking that initial awkwardness is more than doable. The sheer challenge of the title will certainly overwhelm some, but there a plenty of workarounds between Radiant mode and the ability to toggle certain difficulty features off. The atmosphere, aesthetic, and music all lend themselves to an incredibly tense experience where every battle matters and constant management is necessary for survival. Darkest Dungeon is by no means for everyone, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth the stress.

Review: Darkest Dungeon (Switch eShop) via Nintendo Life

Darkest Dungeon has always been an RPG that finds ways to make life uncomfortable for the player, and this Switch version manages to add a couple of usability issues to that list. However, this remains a dauntingly deep, thoroughly absorbing dungeon crawler that will swallow you up for hours at a time.

Darkest Dungeon Review via Nintendo Insider

What I love about Darkest Dungeon is that it knows it’s difficult and it knows it’s going to challenge you. My biggest concern is that by the nature of what it sets out to be, it will put a lot of people off before they even play as it does require the player to put effort into it to understand all of the nuances and general aspects that simply isn’t there in most other games.

This game gets a lot of praise and I still don’t understand why. The gameplay footage I’ve looked at make it seem so stale but if I guess if you’re a fan of rougelikes, this may be for you. I really don’t want to judge a game before I play it but I mean I guess the reviews aren’t wrong.

Despite all the praise this game gets, the screenshots and trailers have never really given me a good idea of how it actually plays. I need to actually sit down and read some more in depth descriptions and decide if it’s worth picking up / adding to the wishlist.

I bought this game to tide me over until Octopathtraverler came out, but it’s so good I can’t put it down. 😁

This is probably the game that I'm the worst at but equally love playing. I am so bad at keeping my poor team alive.

I cannot recommend this game enough though if you're looking for a good solid challenge on the go.

Brutally difficult but oh so rewarding when you complete a quest.

This game scratches so many itches that it's hard to count them all, but I'll give it a try anyway. Tactical based combat, resource management, challenging gameplay, stylish graphics, roguelike influences, great atmosphere, infinite replayability, a cool narrator and amazing boss battles.

And remember, prodigious size alone does not dissuade the sharpened blade.

Such a fun Dark game. This one is much better in hand held using touch controls. I watched a few YouTube begginger videos before I got too deep and that helped me at the start a lot. There is still a lot of trial & error like any challenging game but it’s a fun ride.

Remind yourself that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer.

This game is awesome. Your team will die, be prepared for it and try not to get too attached. Or, be like me and name them after your Discord friends and then publicly mourn them when they die.

Hard. Cruel. Dark. Evil.
You will love this game until you hate it.
Casuals and faint of heart abstain.
