Weekend Gaming Playlist

Long have I slumbered, waiting for my chance to return to this website. Actually, I haven’t gotten much sleep at all recently, what with a busy academic year and plenty of challenges for our current system and society rearing their ugly head as we attempt to establish some semblance of normalcy. So naturally, gaming hasn’t been my highest priority. Despite this isolated, stressful time, sneaking in a bout in a game or two is always helpful for the old nerves, so let’s see what’s on the platter for this weekend, shall we…?

Super Mario 3D All-Stars

Starting off the list with something that isn’t an RPG, I’ve been grappling with my feelings regarding this port of the older 3D Mario titles. On one hand, it’s nice to have them all here, in one bunch, even if I’ve yet to touch Super Mario 64 or Super Mario Galaxy, the former due to my very positive experience with the DS port, and the latter because I’m not much of a fan of its structure and style. So essentially, this has been another opportunity to enjoy the flawed gem that is Super Mario Sunshine. To put it simply, the Pro Controller button mapping… is weird. I don’t like it, but that’s coming from someone who has years of muscle memory for the GameCube controller, specifically in relation to this game. Oh well, those blue coins aren’t going to collect themselves…!

Minoria

I suppose I will begrudgingly admit that the uber-punishing, item-and-lore centric mechanics of an ever-expanding world are a formula that I have come to enjoy during my time with SwitchRPG. No game proved this more to me than Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight, a Metroidvania leaning more towards the “Castle” side of things, with Gothic imagery and a limited inventory that pushes your pattern recognition and reflexes to the extreme. So imagine my surprise and delight when the Switch also received Momodora’s spiritual successor Minoria, a game with a soft, yet charming visual upgrade, enhanced combat, and an all-new narrative to unravel. Though I’m still early on in this title, I look forward to sharing my impressions in the near future.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition

…I’m still working on maxing out a character for use in the post-game dungeons. All by myself. Boy, I wish this matchmaking wasn’t garbage.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

DID YOU GUYS KNOW THAT STEVE FROM MINECRAFT IS IN THIS GAME?!

There’s not much here, unfortunately, and I wish I had more to say on the topic of just about any and all of these titles. Forgive me for being someone who is only crawling back into the sphere of gaming. With that said, I’m looking forward to spending a little bit more time with these games and would love to hear from anyone experiencing them, as well! What are you playing this weekend? Let us know in the comments below!
