Most Anticipated Switch RPGs Coming 2022
2022 has just arrived, but it already seems to be trending towards an exceptional year for Switch RPG fans! To kick off the New Year, the SwitchRPG team has assembled to discuss our most anticipated Switch RPGs (hopefully) coming in 2022! Feel like we left one out, or disagree with our picks? Be sure to let us know in the comments below!

Ben
Rune Factory 5 is probably my most anticipated game of 2022. I wasn’t introduced to the series until Rune Factory 4 Special came to Switch, but the mechanics and really everything about the game clicked with me on a deep level. While I’m most excited for the fresh graphics and new perspective, I really hope that refinements have been made to the dating/marriage system as well as RNG-based progression events because that was pretty bizarre and broken in RF4.

Triangle Strategy is shaping up to scratch the Final Fantasy Tactics itch I’ve had for years quite well. We’ve had a ton of tactical RPGs release on the Switch, many of which are solid, but very few have been in the high fantasy, dark, politically-driven vein of the 1997 classic and have had both the visual and audio chops to back that up. Really looking forward to this one.
I’ve kind of evolved (or devolved, depending on your tastes) to the Atelier fanboy on the site, and I’m not upset about it nor am I mad about getting another game in the series come February. However, I am surprised it’s a sequel to Atelier Sophie but am very much looking forward to how they spin going back to their more traditional turn-based combat system this time around.

Juste Jonny
For 2022 no other game can top my anticipation list than The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 (or whatever its subtitle will be). Sure there are other games to look forward to, like Triangle Strategy, or Metal Slug Tactics, but none of them are a direct sequel to the greatest RPG & overall game of all time BotW. Should BotW 2 slip, then I’ll be very excited to see Triangle Strategy and Metal Slug Tactics contend for my tactical RPG heartstrings.

Gio
I hope BOTW 2 is a rhythm game.
Ocarina Hero.

Evan Bee
Wow Jonny, really killed the momentum with that mention of a non-RPG. Let’s see…

Rich
I agree with Jonny, BOTW2 is top of the list for me followed by Sports Story and Sea of Stars.

I can already see that next year is gonna be tactics heaven for me. So many big tactics games coming out and I’m hype! 😤 😤

Of course, super excited for Triangle Strategy. The demo felt amazing to play and I loved the art and maps that were already shown. Likewise for Metal Slug Tactics as well. I’ve never played any of the Metal Slug games, but I’m always down for more tactics games so I’m definitely getting it.
I want to hope that Digimon Survive comes out next year but I feel like just talking about the game pushes it back like…6 months pffffft. Nonetheless, I need this game injected into my veins. I like Digimon and I love tactics games so I’m hoping it’s good.
I almost forgot about Advance Wars coming out next year too. I liked playing it on the WiiU so I’m happy to have the chance to play it again in full.

Rich
I forgot about Advance Wars, was looking forward to playing it this December. I read today Intelligent Systems might be assisting Wayforward on these remakes/ports.
I am also looking forward to TMNT: Shredders Revenge. Just like this year, I expect 2022 to be indie heavy with some AAA games sprinkled in.

Elias
I am looking forward to the Monster Hunter Rise expansion and Triangle Strategy the most. Legends: Arceus looks good, but I’m a bit worried that it may not be as good as they want us to think it is.

Evan Bee
There’s some weeeeeird games on their way in 2022 and I’m here for it. I have resigned myself to the fact that I will play Legends Arceus and likely be miserable, but yes, Rune Factory 5 is extremely exciting. Let’s not forget about the next Mario and Rabbids, however, as well as a few wacky localizations in the form of Crystar and Monark.
Of course, if we do see something from Monolith Soft, it will rocket to the top of my list.

Rich

I decided to pre-order Arceus, because my son and I have been having a blast playing through Let’s Go and will be starting Diamond and Pearl this week and Sword and Shield so he is in a Pokemon kick. Figure while he is enjoying it play as many games in the series as we can together.
I am also looking forward to the new Mario + Rabbids game. The first is one of the best games on the platform and one of the most underrated. The DK DLC is phenomenal and some of the best single player DLC ever released. I’ll be there day 1 for the sequel.
Maybe Atlus will take up and give us some should i dare say it Persona ports
maybe not P5, but P4G or P3P? Maybe

Elias
Rune Factory 5 is definitely going to be a game that never leaves my Switch until I beat it.

Ben
I didn’t even realize we were getting more Mario + Rabbids so that’s pretty cool.
I’m cautiously optimistic about Arceus, but that’s kind of the same tune I’ve had for pretty much any modern Pokemon game for a while now. Only one I’ve been able to get through in recent years was Let’s Go and that’s mainly because of nostalgic ties to Gen I. I’d really love to find a Pokemon game that I enjoy again – maybe it’s this one.
I’ve heard rumblings of an imminent announcement for P4G on Switch recently, but the same could be said for just about any RPG we’d want on Switch. I hope it turns out to be true though.

Elias
Persona 4 Golden on Switch would make so many people very happy. If that’s the case, I hope 3 would make it, too.
I’ll happily purchase both.

Ben
I hope they do too because the likelihood of me ever playing a game as long as P4G on anything but the Switch is basically zero.

Jeremy
Like many others have noted, Triangle Strategy is easily my most anticipated game for 2022 – no shade on Breath of the Wild 2, which is also high on my list. I’m basically THE target audience for all these HD-2D games, as I absolutely adore the art style and have loved the modernized throw-backs to classic JRPGs that Team Asano have created over the years. With Final Fantasy Tactics being one of my, if not the absolute favorite game in my back catalog, I’m hyped as hell for Triangle Strategy’s release this Spring.

Beyond Triangle Strategy, I also have my hopes set high for the release of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake as well. Dragon Warrior III – as it was called in the NES days – was the first RPG that really made me love the genre, and it’s actually one of the few games from my childhood that I’ve still never rolled credits on. The last time I got close – playing on an emulator in college – my computer got stolen over spring break when I was a mere hour or two away from the endgame!
Outside of these HD-2D titles, I’ve also got my eyes on the likes of Pokemon Legends, Advance Wars, Digimon Survive, and of course RPGolf Legends, Dragon Frania, and whatever other madness KEMCO releases in 2022.

Timothy
I’m definitely excited for Pokémon Legends: Arceus. It’s at the top for me. Can’t help but to also be excited for BotW 2. I’m hoping and praying that we get DQ3 HD2D. Those are my “big 3.”
There are a couple of indies that I just know are going to be great so I’m excited for them as well. “Another Crusade” from Dragon Vein and Sports Story!

Rich
The more I think about it, there are just so many games coming out in 2022 and I still have plenty left from 2021 to finish. Glad Bandai released a pre-order for the physical version of .hack games in North America yesterday. I was able to grab one, looking forward to checking out that series as well in March.

Jeremy
Yeah, my backlog has gotten horrendously long, and that problem’s only going to get worse in 2022.
The big fear (or hope) is that we get more classic ports to the Switch as well. Who knows what ‘Collection of” games Square Enix has in store for us or if the Pixel Remasters head to consoles in 2022.
It really is shaking out to be a banger of a year.

Ben
Speaking of Squenix, I would not be surprised if they announced more SaGa for the platform, perhaps even a SF2 Remaster with how well received its predecessor was this year. Don’t think it will come out next year, but something like that could be announced.

And if they don’t bring those Pixel Remasters to console in 2022, I wouldn’t be surprised if they instead filled the gap with maybe a CT port or something in the meantime, leaving the PRs to come 2023 or later. They’re definitely coming, just a matter of when.
What do you think about our choices? What are you most excited for this year? Let us know!
