While Bravely Default II looks exciting, I’m most excited for the SaGa remaster because I’ve only recently taken a liking to the series and this is a game that I never expected to happen. However, I do think there are some exciting unannounced RPGs coming as well.

While I was extremely hot on Rune Factory 5 for a while (and still very much look forward to it), I’m completely smitten by the news of SaGa Frontier Remastered – a remaster we certainly need! Coming with a visual overhaul that retains the spirit of the original, a speedup function, and previously cut / brand-new additional content makes the return of one of my favorite games from the PS1 era easily my most anticipated Switch RPG coming in 2021! The announcement of this game is literally the last thing I ever expected to happen…but I’m so grateful that it is going to be a thing!

As a fan of classic JRPGs – and the Final Fantasy series in particular – I was instantly enamored by the release of the original Bravely Default back in 2012. The game mashes up classic JRPG elements with many modern conveniences to deliver an experience tailor made for my sensibilities. The characters are charming. The combat and progression systems are engaging. And the quality of life features let you customize your experience on the fly.
Fast forward another eight years, and the team behind Bravely Default are still going strong, having served up two more great titles – Bravely Second and Octopath Traveler. With each new venture, they have continued to prove they have what it takes to deliver just the right balance between classic and modern JRPGs.
Having already played and reviewed this year’s Bravely Default 2 demo, I am beyond eager to see the final game released this February. I’m sure this next iteration will stand alongside the others as jewels in my RPG library.

Because Zelda is an RPG… Main line Zelda games are always a big deal and when the switch released, Nintendo released BOTW alongside it. BOTW consumed most switch early adopters for 100s of hrs. This year we had Age of Calamity and while it’s a continuation of the story (prequel) the game play was very different. Since BOTW I have been wanting more and hope Nintendo draws on Age of Calamity wonderful storytelling. I hope BOTW 2 takes cues from Age of Calamity and finds a way to add in traditional dungeons to BOTW 2. While improving on BOTW I hope Nintendo figures out a way to keep the exploration aspect intact.

A switch exclusive sequel to the greatest RPG ever made – The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2.

A perfect blend of farming sim and dungeon crawler with updated graphics and new systems,? What’s not to love? Rune Factory has a history of really good gameplay overall with a fun narrative that isn’t too tough to follow. I’m really looking forward to getting to know new characters and smack down more monsters while hunting stronger equipment and tending to my garden patch.

I love all the Rune Factory games and it has been so long since we have seen one! These games are full of fun stories and are cheerful and relaxing.

The SMT series is like Pokemon on steroids, and Atlus hasn’t disappointed with it yet. A massively long RPG experience with punishing turn-based combat, wild demon designs, and stellar music, SMTV is sure to deliver the goods.

Honestly I’m just a big fan of the Disgaea series. I like the art style of the series and love the game play, and since the past games have delivered on both of those aspects, I’m feeling pretty good about how 6 will turn out. I’m curious about how the transition from 2d to 3d will hold up when it comes to battles, but I haven’t seen anything yet that has completely turned me off from the game. Honestly, I’m just excited for another semi-big SRPG franchise to come back cause I love tactics games.
What do you think about our choices? What are you most excited for this year? Let us know!
