16 Upcoming Switch RPGs – August 2021
Summer continues on as August rolls around, and just like that, more than half of the year is already behind us. Once again, there are several solid releases – big and small – coming to the Switch this month. And with such a large variety, there’s probably something out there for everyone to look forward to.
Dragon Star Varnir
Idea Factory adds another game to the Switch with Dragon Star Varnir. Play as Zephy as he finds himself caught in a battle between the witches, the Empire, dragons, and a foe much more powerful than anything else in existence. And in typical Idea Factory fashion, play through a quirky battle system that encourages you to take to the sky and fight in three different aerial levels.
Your poor grandmother is no longer able to take care of her park and it’s up to you to keep it running. Explore around the area,build your own campsites, talk to campers, and attract new visitors in this short and heartfelt game.
Dodgeball is a way of life in Dodgeball Academia – a sports RPG where you train to be the ultimate dodgeball champion. Diversify your dodgeball team by upgrading and unlocking characters, and partake in the game’s action packed dodgeball matches as you fight your way to the top. And once you’re done with that, take part in some friendly local versus matches.
Take on nightmares in the unconscious of the protagonist Cassidy as she fights to save her life. In this roguelite that blends elements of brawlers, top-down shooters, and dungeon crawlers, make use of your lucid powers as you fight to survive. And when you’re away from the nightmares, live Cassidy’s life and forge friendships in her life to give her hope and unlock memories to help fight off the darkness.

In this anime-infused action RPG, fight against hordes of demons and bosses that seek to bring darkness to the world. The seal keeping the Dark Emptiness at bay has been broken and it now threatens to consume everything. Make use of your skills to seal the darkness and save the world.
Shadowverse Champion’s Battle
Based on the hit mobile card game, Shadowverse: Champion’s Battle is a card RPG where it’s up to you to save the Shadowverse Club from being shut down. Build your own deck using one of six different archetypes and over 600 cards to choose from. And with online and local matches available, get ready to battle your friends and foes in this card game that’s simple to learn but hard to master.
In this cute low-poly narrative adventure game, you play as Fennel, a shy fox that has just moved into Button City. You quickly discover the arcade in the city, but also learn that the mayor is planning on shutting it down. Stop Peppermint Pepperbottom from taking away the arcade, and make a new life for yourself in Button City.
Become Vasilisa in this card-based RPG where you must battle against demons in order to find out the truth about the Black Book. Said to be able to grant the wish of anyone who uncovers all seven of its seals, Vasilisa wishes to bring back her dead lover from their untimely death. Based on Northern Slavic mythology, collect new spell cards and learn new skills on your journey to find the Black Book.
With several tales of knights and heroes who wish to save the world from the goodness of their hearts or the betterment of others, it’s time to become the exact opposite: a hero just looking to find the girl of their dreams. With up to five different characters to romance, go on a quest to find love and battle to keep yourself alive in the meantime.
For those looking to scratch that cyberpunk itch, Foreclosed may be the game for you. Play as Evan Kapnos as he flees before his identity and brain implants are auctioned off to the highest bidder. Upgrade your weapon’s potential, learn and control new skills, and hack into different systems to turn the tide of battle into your favor. And with a graphic novel-esque style, this game aims to stand out from the rest.
Joining the fray of permadeath tactics games is Fort Triumph. Lead a wacky group of heroes through this parody fantasy plot and battle through tiled procedural maps. Choose up to four factions and four classes as you build up your base and your team.
Witch Spring 3 Re:Fine
When it comes to choosing between light and darkness, which would you choose? For Eirudy, she’ll need to make that decision as she’s thrown right in the middle of a giant plot between deities and humans. As a standalone title, enjoy what the Witch Spring Universe has to offer in this new title with new visuals, a new soundtrack, and charming characters.
Sword & Souls: Neverseen
From the makers of Sword & Souls comes a bigger standalone adventure. Stranded on an island, you find yourself in the middle of a conflict between a witch and a village of strange folk. In a cycle of training and fighting, build up your strength to battle the witch during combat which mixes real-time and turn-based mechanics.
Get your farming equipment ready because it’s time for another farming adventure – but this time with a twist. As you travel through Planimal Point, you’ll come across strange Slimes that have the power to mutate your crops, with up to 72 mutations available for you to discover. King’s Bounty II
The highly anticipated King’s Bounty II is finally releasing this month. As the sequel to King’s Bounty, dig deep into this new entry that boasts an entirely new epic tale, enemies, factions, and features in the fantasy world of Antara. Play as one of many unassuming heroes who must fight for their own future in this non-linear RPG. For fans of expansive stories, game mechanics, and locations, King’s Bounty may just be for you.
Baldo the Guardian Owls
In this action adventure RPG, discover a world full of puzzles and mysteries to uncover. Play as Baldo as you come across many wacky characters in his journey across the world. Take in the open world and go where your heart desires in this Zelda-like game.
